The trackball tracking is very skitterish, jumpy, and not smooth. For precision mouse-work, I had to use multiple fingers and even multiple hands on the trackball to try to make the tracking as smooth as possible, but that was not always effective. Then I popped out the trackball this mouse came with and popped in my old Logitech trackball, and now the tracking is smooth and perfect. All the other features on this mouse are interesting and make it worth getting if you need them, but be aware that the tracking is not nearly as smooth as Logitech

To preface, this is not my first Protoarc product. I’ve also used their EM03 trackball, but that one is a finger ball (the trackball is located up front instead of on the side) and not angled, which doesn’t help with my wrist pronation and carpal tunnel issues. Enter the EM05.
Very solidly built mouse but doesn’t have a lot of weight to it, so some people might not like that it doesn’t have that “grounded” sort of feeling. Otherwise it punches above its weight I find – easy to connect to any device via usb-c, 2.4ghz usb dongle or bluetooth wirelessly. The trackball rolls smoothly and is very easy to pop out and clean, but the ball won’t just drop out of its slot. The metal scroll wheel feels okay but still lacking compared to the industry standard in the Logitech infinite scroll wheel in terms of smoothness and tactility. I also like that it has this sort of extended “lip” at the bottom to cradle the edge of your hand as you cradle it around the mouse.
The angle on the EM05 is very comfortable compared to other vertical trackballs I’ve tried prior like the MX Ergo. I personally prefer the steeper angle so I can get my wrist as vertical as possible to avoid the overpronation but obviously not everyone will like this.
For any left-handers wondering, this mouse is unfortunately not going to be for you with the buttons all located specifically for right-handers. Hopefully Protoarc produces a left-handed version of this in the future for the lefties out there.

I would give this 6 out of 5 if I could. It works great, feels nice in hands, and otherwise does everything expected of it.

I am so happy with the design & functionality of this mouse. I’ve been using trackballs since the 90’s. So much better than the standard mouse. I was impressed by thus mouse. Has a very comfortable hand position.

Very responsive and gret quality. Easy to connect and no issues losing connectivity. Very comfortable for larger hands. Highly recommend!

Easy to use. It was a quick plug in and start rolling. Took a little bit of time to break the muscle memory of trying to move it but not much.
Easy to clean. If you start to roll odd, flip over, pop ball out, clean inside ball area and ball, pop back and ta-da! I used computer screen lens wipes because I had it near by and I knew it wouldn’t leave behind lint.
If it’s not responding after you cleaned it, plug it in and charge it.
Colors great, although I just picked whatever shipped the soonest.
While great at helping wrist, it has started to cause pain in the meaty muscle area, inside palm, below thumb. I use this around 70 hours a week and I’m use that has a lot to do with it. Hopefully I’ll find something to help both, wrist and hand muscles.
Overall great purchase. I keep this at home and still looking for a traveling option.

This company seems to make some really nice products. This helps keep the strain off your wrist. Takes a while to get used to but many people that change don’t go back. Hey Avery, please don’t kick me okay

I’ve only ever owned logitech trackballs for the last 20 years. The last one i purchased broke in less than 2 years, so i thought id give this a try, and wow, was I pleasantly surprised at the build quality and functionality. It’s half the price of the Logitech and just as good, if not better. Allows connection to 3 different bluetooth devices with a simple press of a button. No proprietary wireless doohickies like logitech. Highly recommend!

If you’re accustomed to a thumb controlled track-ball or don’t have enough surface space for moving a mouse, or having issues with carpal tunnel, I recommd this trackball.
I started using trackball more than 20 years ago when I developed carpal tunnel from using the tiny keyboard and track pad on my IBM ThinkPad when attending college. Making the switch solved my wrist issues. I still usually use a mouse for gaming, but I have used trackballs for normal PC work ever since. However, all of the trackball I’ve used had my hand lay flat, similar, but better than a mouse. I’ve the side-ways mice before, and frankly, the shift of hand-weight made them more difficult to control, in my opinion, so I’ve never really liked them compared to other mice. That said, this is the first such hand position for a trackball I’ve seen, and I was intrigued, since my complaint for the position was related to arm movement. I ordered this and after a couple months usage, I can say this is the most comfortable trackball I’ve owned (it actually beats out my previous discontinued favorite, the discontinued Microsoft Trackball Explorer) . Another feature I really like that hasn’t been readily usable on other trackball’s I’ve used is the dpi button. I do occasionally game on my laptop, and this turned out to be a nice feature-add for me, too. So overall, I highly recommend for existing trackball users or people who are looking for ways to improve the ergonomics of their laptop or PC use. 5 stars.

– This mouse is quite different as it uses a trackball to mouse the mouse cursor, something I have not used for over 2 decades. It brings back some memories when using the trackball.
– To move the mouse, you would use your thumb to move the trackball. It may take time to get used to. The advantage of this mouse is that the mouse is stationary, and it’s perfect for places where you have very limited space with your mouse to move around. Also you could literally put this mouse on any surface and still be able to use the mouse as it moves with the trackball and not the optical/laser on the bottom like regular mouse design.
– ERGONOMIC: This new mouse from ProtoArc is even better than the original ones that I am currently using. Now the hand feels even more natural when you’re using it. If you’re a first time user, it may take sometime to get use to, but once you’re used to it, it’s quite comfortable compare to using regular mouse, especially when you’re on the computer for hours each session.
– CONNECTION: There are 3 modes on this mouse you can select from. 2 Bluetooth connections and 1 with a usb dongle. The dongle is tugged nicely under the mouse and so if not in use you won’t lose it. Good design. With 2 bluetooth connections, you could connect this mouse to 2 devices that use bluetooth, and just press the Mode button on the bottom to switch to the connection you like. Very convenient and simple to operate.
– Overall a very nice built trackball mouse. Holding it is very comfortable and it contours to your right hand. However, if you’re using the mouse a lot in your work like autocad, photoshop, etc, then I would suggest getting an ergonomic mouse with optical or laser on the bottom because you would have to move your thumb a lot and in the long run it’s not beneficial to your thumb at all. But for regular office work, or normal use I’d recommend giving this a try.

I just received this alternative to a Std Mouse, (to a Std Trackball Mouse, and to a Std Vertical Mouse), and I must say it is all it claims to be in terms of use and functionality. The buttons work very well in their designed locations and the trackball ensures I minimize my hand/arm movements. I am enjoying the user experience.
I had long ago moved from using a Std Mouse to using the Trackball alternatives, (of which I highly recommend the Kensington, Nulea, & Logi-tech options if someone is not ready to move to a Vertical Mouse).
So while my current favorite option for a Std Mouse is the Logitech Ergo Trackball Mouse, when it was recently liberated (ie lifted/stolen) from my temporary workstation location, I decided it was high time to try the Vertical options available.
I looked and tried several Vertical Mouse options, and although fairly comfortable with a few, I missed the use and functionality of having a Trackball Mouse. So when I discovered that Kensington & Logi-tech and a few other brands had some Trackball Vertical Mouse options I was thrilled.
After reviewing the, (limited), options available I ended up selecting the ProtoArc Vertical Wireless Trackball Mouse, EM05 NL Bluetooth Ergonomic Rollerball Mouse for the following reasons:
1> A “true” vertical mouse setup with a 62′ Tilt
2> A rechargeable mouse. Charging via a Type C USB cable option, with an included charging cable.
3> A 2.4 Hz Dongle along with Blue-tooth wireless connectivity options
4> Compatible with both Apple / Mac, Windows, PC Android, (this means in a pinch my significant other can use it as well for her Mac).
As noted above I just received this mouse and have been putting it through its paces and so far, I think it’s excellent.
However, I am giving it 4 of 5 Stars, (as the system is not allowing me to give a 4.5 out of 5), for the following reasons:
A> The trackball could be a little bigger even though it is thumb-specific, I have found the tracking of the larger trackballs for finger control tends to be a little easier to use, and therefore I would like the thumb trackball to be a little larger for that control.
B> The Dongle could be set up for easier visibility. I find that keeping the Top and connecting edge Black requires a bright lighted area to ensure it is connected correctly and smoothly. So a brightly colored top and a white, (or other bright color connecting edge to the USB portion), would allow for faster and easier connection setup.
C> Non-Programmability of Buttons prevents customization
D> Lack of covering for the charging port and Dongle insert areas would be a plus from my perspective
With that said, besides what I noted above, I also have the following recommendation:
E> The creation of a Travel Size version of this or other Vertical Mouse. (As noted above I was using the Logitech Ergo Trackball Mouse and although it’s big, I had a case for it so it allowed me to take it for some limited travel, so having the option to purchase a case would be a very good option. However, when doing serious traveling I defaulted to using a “miniature version” of the Std Mouse as space becomes a major restriction.
So even with the feedback given above, I do want to stress that overall I am very happy with this ProtoArc Vertical Wireless Trackball Mouse, EM05 NL Bluetooth Ergonomic Rollerball Mouse, and I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially to those interested in transitioning to a vertical mouse and to anyone who would also appreciate having access to trackball functionality as well.

After dealing with wrist strain from regular mice, I decided to switch to a vertical mouse and found this ProtoArc vertical trackball mouse. I work long hours on my computer, so an ergonomic option seemed like the right move.
Right out of the box, the vertical design felt almost natural in my hand. The trackball was smooth with easy navigation as I didn’t need to move my arm much. I was also impressed with the ability to connect it to three different devices by changing the channel which you can do by pressing a button on the bottom of the mouse. I didn’t need to however, as I just used the dongle in my KVM switch to use the mouse across 2 devices without switching channels. I also really like the fact that it doesn’t need batteries and it can be recharged through a regular USB-C cable which came included, and I can tell you, the cable appears to be of very high quality. One recommendation, if you feel that the mouse moves too fast, you can just go to mouse settings on Windows and adjust the mouse pointer speed, I found a speed of 2 or 3 produces better navigation.
On the downside, I found the thumb placement for the trackball a bit awkward at first (it’s quite large compared to a regular mouse), and it took me some time to get used to it. It’s not a dealbreaker, but there’s definitely a learning curve. I just wish it was slightly towards the left so that my arm doesn’t need to be completely vertical, but I’m not a guru in ergonomics, so I’m not sure if this would impact the benefits of a vertical mouse.
Overall, the ProtoArc mouse could potentially be more comfortable, but I still need to use it for a few more days to get used to it and adjust to the trackball position.
